My family and I are moving to Cairns (two kids under 8) Trying to decide which suburb to live in. Narrowed it down to Edge hill/whitfield/freshwater or Trinity/kewarra beach. We do not drive and will be working in Cairns CBD. Any suggestions?

Hey, I've been living in Cairns for close to 4 years now (moved from Tas) we're in Brinsmead at the moment and will most likely be buying in Redlynch (where our kids go to school)....both great suburbs. From your list it looks like you have probably sussed out the areas to avoid. As has been mentioned already though if you want to be closest to the CBD then its Edge Hill, however it is one of the most expensive suburbs, but a lovely little community, Whitfield is close by and a little cheaper. The beaches are lovely but probably a bit far out of town for you.

My advice is rent for a while until you get a better idea of the area and decide the area you really want to be in if you are deciding to buy up here.

I've lived in Trinity beach and presently in Kewara. It's so great out the Northern Beaches area, however, being only 15 mins driving is great if you work in the CBD, but if you are busing it, it can take 40 mins by bus. All the other suburbs you've mentioned are great, but I really think your kids would me happier more near the beach(s).

Smithfield mall isn't far away, they can walk to school (High school down the road too.) http://smithfieldshs.eq.edu.au/wcmss/

Trinity beach has a state school, http://trinitybeachss.eq.edu.au Kewarra has Trinity Anglican School (TAS) http://www.tas.qld.edu.au There are many shortcuts through these two beaches for walking.

Good Luck

Because you don't drive, then I suggest you live pretty close to the CBD and out of the places you have pick, it leaves you with either Edge Hill or Whitfield and maybe Trinity Beach, especially if you are going to rely on public transport.

Trinity is the best! Lived there most of my (short) life, i'm a smitty girl now. Trinity's good, best beach in Cairns and I always felt safe around there. And if you want a more secluded beach 'Taylors Point' is good for that, if you want a more active beach 'Trinity Beach' - both are in Trinity. haha I'm so biased though :P
