Please don't use Fahrenheit to non-Americans. Only Americans use it and everyone else doesn't, so we will not understand it. For us, 50 degrees is a scorching hot weather. Don't really meant to sound rude here, but I'm just being very honest.

Anyway, Perth is quite wet in the winter. It's similar to most Californian cities; dry hot summer and cool wet winters. Melbourne is drier in the winter, than Perth, but it's colder and windy. You can expect windy rain days, but there's still a lot of sunshine. Both cities do not have snow in the winter. You should expect the day temps to be around 11-15 degrees (Celsius) in Melbourne and 17-22 in Perth.

Compared to California... Melbourne's like Sacramento. Not as cold as Pittsburgh, not as warm as Boca. Perth's more like Atlanta. Our winter's are relatively mild in Australia. Our "wet" season usually starts around September, so our winter's are relatively dry. But we do tend to get cold, blustery winds coming in straight off the ocean. You won't need a goose down jacket in either city, but a warm polar fleece jacket is certainly a must as it can get quite cold... especially in the mornings and at night.
