Beer has moved enormously over the last thirty years. One of the joys of living in Australia was the regionalism of beer. If you travelled to Brisbane you drank XXXX, Sydney you had a choice of Tooths or Toohyes (apologies for the spelling). Down to Melbourne and in Young & Jacksons you would order to CUB beer.

Coopers doesn't come into the discussion because it is not a beer, its an ale.

In recent times there has been an explosion of new brands. There is just so much choice, so many micro breweries, so much lager. Old favourites like KB are dieing (RIP) but new brands come up. My commercial current favourite is Tooheys Dry. But this a subjective argument and my tastes change over time.

There will be as many claims for "best" beer as there are beer drinkers. I disagree quite often with Bingalee but she has good taste with beer. Resch's is an excellent drop. The two Tasmanian beers Cascade and Boags are among the best in Australia and their light beers are the best. Light beer is necessary with random breath testing and a full flavoured light beer is a rarity yet Tasmania produces the two best. It is personal preference which is better. Adelaide has some barely drinkable beer with West End and Southwark but Coopers makes a good variety of beers with great flavour..

There are a few boutique breweries as well that make fine beers. If you are in Sydney, try the Victory Bitter at the Lord Nelson Hotel. They make a good Dogbolter as well but don't even think about that one if you are driving. I think it is the Matilda Bay brewery in Fremantle that produces some fine beer and it is worth chasing if you are in the west.

Frank Hardy was once asked to judge beers in a tasting competition. He had to award points out of five. He gave five points to every beer he tasted. "When you are hot and thirsty, " he said, "there is no such thing as a bad beer." That is something I cannot disagree with.

Well the one I end up pouring the most at the club is Tooheys New and it's by a fair margin too.

I would like to taste James Squire's Golden Ale though, looks nice. Don't think it's Australian but the point still stands.

A new brewery opened 5 minutes from me called The Australian Brewery & pub.I went there last weekend & had my first taste of their pilsener. It was a very good beer & I'll definitely go back. The only thing is the cost, very high.

I also like XXXX gold.

Little Creatures is good and Coopers is pretty clean tasting. VB and XXXX are the worst beers on the planet. Even Korean beer is better.

@ Cecil. Ale is a type of beer. What a strange thing to say.

Hey mate , that question could start a war ! Loyalties run deep ....I remember the day of the bushfire in Tassie in '67 when the cascade brewery went up in smoke & one of my RAAF mates was in tears !

I thought it must have been his family home that had gone but no , it was the brewery !

Not a drinker but definitely VB. It's like the 'flagship' brand of beer here.

aussie beer is a bit crap

VB is the best deal, 4.7% alcohol, 375ml cans, and its usually one of the cheapest

most aussie beer tastes the same, slightly more filling than USA beers so you cant usually down as many in a night of drinking
