It depends on the city. Sydney is quite expensive to live in, Melbourne a little less and cities like Perth and Hobart are quite cheap.

For a reasonable house in Melbourne, where I live, rent will probably set you back five to six hundred dollars per month (each) in the inner-middle suburbs and another three or four hundred on groceries (depending on how you like to live) each month.

The regional centres will be somewhat cheaper, but in general you can live reasonably on a household income of about 60,000 pa, which is a little below the average wage here.

Within a 15 minute bus ride to the city (Sydney) you can find units easily(apartments) with 2 bedrooms for approx. $350- 400 a week. These are not top of the range, but decent modest living. If you shop at supermarkets such as Aldi you could easily live on $120 fruit, meat, groceries a week - modestly. If you want to eat out, go to the pub and have a life - you obviously need a lot more. Try areas like Summer Hill, Enmore, Randwick, etc.

There are a number of sources online that might help. The Going Global website (linked below) has a guide you can buy.

The Trinity College in Perth, Western Australia (linked below) has a large range of options.
