Join the army & if you pass the most rigorous & torturous physical & mental tests then maybe you might get accepted to do the course to become a commando ...

Of those who make the course , approx. 30 % eventually make it , the rest falling out along the way . As for promotion , that's based on ability & opportunities but the way it works is that the smaller the corps or unit , the harder it is to get promotion .

It may have slipped your notice but the last 3 VC winners were all corporals .

If you want to go to the RMC, you had better check out the RMC web site http://www.army.gov.au/Army-life/Army-careers/RMCD

Once you are an officer, if you have shown aptitude for commando training, that's where you will go if you apply.

Few officers make it to Lieutenant Colonel but if you do, you can expect about $120,000 to $160,000 a year depending on years of service.

The only method of Direct Enlistment as a Commando in the Australian Army is through the Special Forces Direct Recruitment Scheme. You will be enlisted in the Infantry Corps.

If you are successful as a Special Forces Direct Recruitment Scheme General Entry Commando you will graduate from your Basic Military training, Infantry Initial Employment Training and Commando Initial Employment Training at the rank of private. As with other jobs within the Army, you will be eligible to be promoted to higher ranks. Based on your performance, successful completion of both Army and Commando promotion courses and vacancies, you can expect to be considered for promotion to Lance Corporal, Corporal, Sergeant and Warrant Officer as your career progresses.
