Going out and getting lost & stranded is the biggest danger-to Aussies as well as visitors. If he does travel away from the main base and is not accompanied always have up to date maps showing the nearest water/habitation and take a compass. Don't go into the outback without informing someone of your route and schedule. Be aware of dangerous animals such as crocs and dangers such as cliff edges. If driving make sure your vehicle is fully serviced and checked and if it breaks down don't leave it unless you know where to go.

It can be very dangerous, although the job sounds more dangerous!

Look the outback can be dangerous and what makes it worse is that away from the major highways (mostly on the coast / between capitals) there isn't a lot of traffic so if you get off on some bush track, and break down or get lost then it could be days, weeks or months before someone comes by.

So don't go anywhere without telling people where he is going. If he's in a small township, and he's going to the shops 3 doors down then not an issue; but anything beyond the main area tell people where he's going. If he goes travelling go with a local, carry maps and carry some water / food.

As long as he don't wander off and does what the locals tell him he'll be fine.

This land isn't too kind to those whom make mistakes.

A way of thinning the herd I guess.

But even the most experienced must keep their wits about them and accept responsibility that if they choose to walk off they might not come back.

But it's likely that your dad will have people who are to keep an eye on him.

Taylor, I have done a tour of the Kimberli's, and yes if you don't watch your step, it is dangerous. Where your dad will be is a camp, as long as he is within the camp, and ventures out with an experienced local he will be fine.

Our outback is very unforgiving to people who take it too casually but if your Dad uses common sense & doesn't do foolish things like wandering off alone , he'll be fine .

the coast or the desert?...some things that will kill you in Australia are

Coast: white pointer sharks,Box jellyfish, crocodiles, unpatrolled beach surf,,Blue ringed octupus

Desert:.Lost(heat & lack of water),snakes(Aus has about 6 deadly variety),red back spiders,funnell web spiders,

But a pretty safe place as all of these are not found in the same place
