Relative to what or where?

We are south of the Equator (in the southern hemisphere), to the east of India, across the other side of the Pacific Ocean from (west) South America, south of Papua-New Guinea and north of Antarctica.

Australia -

Island continent between the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific Ocean.

Australia is the world's smallest continent but sixth-largest country.

Exports -

coal, iron ore, gold, meat, wool, alumina, wheat, machinery and transport equipment.

Imports -

machinery and transport equipment, computers and office machines, telecommunication equipment and parts; crude oil and petroleum products

Well seeing as relative location means: A position described solely with reference to another location. It has changed from "an island in the south Pacific" to "an independent flourishing nation situated at X,Y". At the same time, transportation has changed to more direct and interaction between the two nations has increased dramatically due to the ability to travel between the places in such short times. In the 1600's the trip would take about 4 months, as such only those that had to go there (mostly convicts) were sent. Nowadays in spur of the moment travel, anyone that can afford to go can be there in less than 2 days. Communication between the two places used to travel via ship and take months, now its almost instantaeous. The relative location of Australia in terms of transportation and communication has moved from the middle of the Pacific to nearly next door, due to the change in technology. Its still a vast distance away technically, but time-wise, its almost next door. //d
