I have always wanted to visit Australia, but never had the funds. Now, I think I may be able to afford it. I was thinking about visiting either Sydney or Cairns since I would love to see the harbor and opera house, but I love to scuba dive and the Great Barrier Reef is calling. I would love to fly Qantas aboard one of their new A380's, but if there is a cheaper airline, I'd have to settle. How much do you think a round trip flight from Chicago in America would be to Cairns or Sydney, accommodations, food, and maybe a day or two of scuba diving on the reef would cost?

The cheapest flight to Sydney I could was a little over $A1000, which be about the same in $US. As for hotels e.t.c Sydney and Cairns can be similar in price, in that both have highly expensive and fairly cheap accomodation. Both places have cheap and expensive food, including the classic fast food places like McDonalds. Though generally Cairns will be somewhat cheaper than Sydney.

Really it depends on what kind of experience you want. If you a more adventerous tropical holiday then Cairns is the way to go, if you want a city experience then come down to Sydney. Time of year make a difference. Cairns is best from April - October during the dry season, with Sydney at tit's best anytime of year, but it really shines climate wise about September to March where goes from warm to some summer heat up to around 90F (we can get the odd day over 100F in summer).

As for scuba in Cairns I can't help you, but I'd allow a few hundred dollars per session including equipment hire.

Well the costs can vary. Australia is in fact a good budget backpacker destination. More about that later.

Ok, flights vary in price. Probably the A380s are going to be more expensive. Other flights from the US all require a stop over, so you can shop around and find the best deal. Perhaps via singapore or even Korea (which seems to have a number of cheaper flights for some reason).

Anyway, if you are heading up to the barrier reef, you can actually fly to somewhere like cairns or townsville via singapore.

Really talk to a travel agent about this, as trying to get the best deals via online websites is not practical. But use both and compare.

The barrier reef is a little bit more complicated. You have a whole range of costs such as boat hire, scuba hire and so on. So it gets out of the budget range. You see the problem is that most of the reef is about 2 hours boat trip away from the coast. Worth seeing, as is that part of the world.

You can save money staying in backpacker hostels (basically you travel by bus, when the bus stops, people from the hostels line up to try and get you to get on their free bus to their hostel). You can also camp (in Aus

Relax on sun-drenched beaches, dine at award-winning restaurants and much more is what you should get on your trip to Sydney. Find more with hotelbye . Among the world's great designs and a definitely should see in Sydney is the Sydney Opera House, a location is just a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the star appeal on the glittering harbour. That elegant making, designed like covers or billowing sails, perches on a finger of land surrounded by water. Sydney is just a distinctive spot to invest your vacation therefore, do not eliminate the chance to go to a good city.
