Taronga is the most beautiful Zoo with stunning views of Sydney Harbour and the city. Melbourne has some great exhibits and has gorillas (Taronga has orang outans and chimpanzees) and gentoo penguins. Adelaide zoo is worth a visit just for the pandas. Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria was the first place to breed platypuses in captivity. The Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo and Werribee in Victoria are large open field zoos, well worth visiting. There is a zoo in Canberra which I haven't visited but have heard good things about.

There is also a tourist rip-off place near Brisbane called Australia Zoo but when there are much better zoos than that in Australia, don't waste your money.

Both are good, but I prefer Melbourne Zoo. It's the oldest zoo in Australia, and I just love the elephants and gorillas they have there. It's also a great place to walk around. I just had a better experience there than Taronga.

Western plains or Werrribee are best to see animals in space and a real attempt to show them in close to natural surroundings.

Taronga has the benefit of it's position , Melbourne is good but nothing special

Billy Boy, after I saw what they done building natural habitats and getting away from cages, Toronga is far better than what I have seen, and I'm not comparing with Melbourne, but with Granby, Toronto, and another I went to in the US.
