I would suggest starting in Melbourne in April, and then gradually heading north up the coast through Sydney and on to the Gold Coast (driving), and then if you can afford it a flight to Cairns to finish up - it's too far to enjoy the drive, but it's really worth it.

Melbourne is a very trendy, arty sort of city with heaps to do. People in Melbourne wear a lot of black etc. Great coffee shops and wine bars. Then the coast up to Sydney is full of gorgeous beach towns. It won't really be beach season down south anymore, so perhaps consider detouring from Bega through to Canberra instead of going up the coast the rest of the way. Eden and Merimbula are particularly nice spots on the south coast that you will go through either way you choose to go.

Canberra is interesting but slightly odd, it's all planned so it's completely different from other Australian cities. There are plenty of museums, parliament house etc to visit.

Sydney is full of energy and very colourful and beautiful. Visit the Rocks, Darling Harbour, take a ferry to Manly, Blue Mountains day trip, climb the Bridge etc.

Then head up the gorgeous NSW coast through Port Macquarie, Coff's Harbour and Byron Bay. Byron Bay is very alternative/hippie style.

Then on to the Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise) which is a major tourist area. As well as the beaches there are theme parks and loads of other tourist activities.

Then if you can manage it fly from Brisbane to Cairns for your last week. Cairns is tropical so in May it is lovely and warm (almost too warm?). Once again there is heaps for a tourist to do here - the Great Barrier Reef, crocodile tours in the Daintree River, Daintree Rainforest wildlife tours, the skyrail to Kuranda etc.

Have fun

Melbourne, definitely. Everyone says Sydney, but it's not that fantastic - our public transport sucks. But, Bondi and the Rocks and the Opera House are worth seeing and the Blue Mountains which are south of Sydney. Actually, the south coast is a beautiful place - Kioloa, Bateman's Bay, Turross Heads.

Melbourne - Just the whole city is amazing. And cheap, too. And they have trams, so getting around is no problem.

If you can manage it, maybe go to the outback - Uluru. That'd be an amazing experience.

Anywhere up north past Cairns would also be very beautiful.

I've never been to South or Western Australia, but they'd be worth a visit, I reckon.

Hope you have a good trip here :]

The Gold Coast is great for fun in the sun. There's a several theme parks... though Sea World may want to be avoided. It's just a glorified pool and aquarium... Wet 'N' Wild is great for getting wet, and Movie World and Dream World have some fun rides. The whole atmosphere up there is very chilled and relaxed... very Australian ;)

Newcastle, often forgotten, is great for surfing though I'm told it can be a bit rough.

Sydney is really busy but has a lot of tourist attractions. Go to Manly or Bondi for some water fun, visit the museums and galleries, do a bit of shopping... there's too much to do in Sydney though once there everyone I know complains that there's nothing to do :P

The Blue Mountains are very beautiful and there's some great hikes down there. In Leura there's an excellent candy shop, don't miss it! Jenolan caves are also very beautiful. The caves have their difficulties displayed in a few locations in the area and they display how many stairs are in each. The difficulties are a little misleading. I'd just hiked all around the Blue Mountains when I last went to Jenolan, my legs were killing me yet caves marked as the most difficult were simple enough. Some parts can be slippery so if you laugh at someone else who slips on their bottom, be prepared to fall on yours too.

Canberra is pretty tame but not a horrible place to visit for a few days. Everyone checks out parliament... last time I went there was a neat science museum... but that was a while ago so it might not be there anymore.

If you're here during (our) winter then you should check out Perisher Blue or Thredbo for some snow boarding (or skiing if thats your thing). I go to Perisher, it's very friendly and fun.

I've never been to Melbourne so I can't much help you out but my friends who have been loved it. Great for shopping.

I'd probably not go to Adelaide if I didn't have family there so unless you wanna meet my family, I can't really suggest anything for you to do...

I've never been to WA but I know a lot of old people who go... so I'm assuming its kinda old-peoplish.

I've heard the Northern Territory is very beautiful though again, I don't know much about it.

Ayers Rock is a must see... but don't take any rocks from there because they're said to be cursed. They're constantly being sent rocks in the mail that tourists took because they aparently brought bad luck.

There's Tassie too... but... yeah... that's Tassie... no one goes there XD

Have fun while you're here!

the following is a list of surely ward off/ "do no longer visit" parts. !/ Nara Inlet, Hook Island,Qld. For crusing, windsurfing, snorkeling, diving. 2/ Birdsville, interior Qld. For an outback experience, even without The Race. 3/ The Hawksbury River, needed north coast, New South Wales. Lush, eco-friendly, hills, residences, river, aqua and standard farming, nationwide parks. 4/ Melbourne, Victoria. noticeably in the course of Cup Week, yet any time -- there is virtually continuously some type of competition. 5/ the great Ocean street, Victoria. superb sea coast and hinterland and fishing/scuba on the`Shipwreck Coast. 6/ Queenstown, Tasmania. A rural mining city proudly showing the disastrous outcomes of irresponsible ecological harm. 7/ "The Coorong" and "Piccaninnie Ponds" marine and wild existence Conservation Parks, South Australia. For what should not be considered everywhere else. 8/ Rottenest Island, West Australia. For the vegetation and organic world -- a number of it non-human -- and multi laid-decrease back recreations. keep in concepts those places must be prevented. they are the position Aussies contained in the recognize prefer to bypass. we do not favor note getting out and spoiling them. I would definately see Sydney for

Beaches:

For Surf beaches Bondi (go to the Rathouse/RSL and have a beer as it has a great view of Bondi beach, Manly, Dee Why, Palm Beach,

Harbour Beaches:

Greenleaf in Double Bay, Parsley Bay or Watsons Bay. You can hire Kyaks and catamarans at Rose Bay or Mosman and go out to the Harbour which is great.

Kings Cross, Opera House, Sydney Bridge Climb (AU$200+ tho), Taronga Zoo, Centrepoint Tower Lookout (It was $20p/p when I went 5 years ago), The Rocks has a great market on Sundays, Circular Quay to Manly Ferry.

I would definately go to Northern Queensland aswell like Cape Tribulation

http://www.capetribulation.com.au/

I know several people who went there and said it was the best place they went to in Australia. There's Cairns too.

Not to sure of where you can stay, theirs plenty of places and depends on how much you want to spend (staying in Hotel, motel, hostel etc).

If your near Brisbane, go up to the sunshine coast, to Pomona, Eumundi (awesome markets on Sat and Wed mornings) Maleny and Montville, beautiful and really natural. Steer clear of Nimbin, (northern nsw) over hyped reputation as a hippie joint, it's a junkie joint!! and filthy. Australia Zoo is up on the Sunshine Coast too!! Another fave of mine for a day trip, is Mt Tamborine, Gold coast hinterland, great for a day trip, accomodation is a bit boutique so would cost a bit, but lovely to go up for a day, gallery walk is great for quirky shopping, but there is also glow worm caves, thunder egg park and a couple of other oddities. Have a great holiday, it's a beautiful place!!
