I am looking to move to Australia on a working holiday visa at the end of October. I am planning on staying in Sydney for the first six months to save money and then travel the rest of the year.

How easy is it to get a job in Sydney? I am preferably looking for an admin job. I have 15months experience as an Office Manager/Receptionist & also a years experience as a waitress.

In terms of entering the country - I have my Working Holiday Visa and it stipulates that I should have a certain amount of funds in my bank account before I enter the country. Do they check this when you arrive or is it just a warning to make sure that people take enough with them?

I like to have things organised which is why I am freaking out a bit about finding a job!

I understand that hostel's are a safe place to stay until I can get a shared flat? How easy is it to find accommodation?

Thanks is advance for your help.

Good luck with trying to save money in Sydney. It's one of the most expensive cities in the world to live. Yes, they will ask you about the funds in your bank account, and yes they will check. There is a lot of competition for jobs here. Hostels can be OK, some are pretty awful. You can stay at a YHA place or you could possibly look at a website like global freeloaders, or do some WOOF ing.

Sydney is one of the world's most lively cities and can also be a gate way to the rest of Australia so you will visit that fascinating and vibrant town with this help hotelbye . If you traveling in household then you should know that the zoo from Sydney is a superb household getaway and a great way to see a few of Australia's popular native wildlife, along with creatures from across the world. Once here you may also start to see the Sky Safari gondola and, through the annual winter migration that place turned a dream place. In Sydney you can also visit: Sydney Heads, Circular Quay, Opera Home or Royal Botanic Gardens; also you can look at the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Rocks historical and this isn't all, the Museum of Contemporary Art, stored within an Art Deco making is waiting for your visit.

Abi, let me clear something up, and I have argued this issue with a couple of Australian counterparts on this WHV. The web site is only a guideline, and not the full stipulation. But you must have Australian $5,000.00 or access to it, that is separate to any traveling/spending money. The $5K is emergency funds. Your are also supposed to have a round trip airline ticket or an on forward, which can be open, as the validity of the tickets is 12 months.

You may have a slim chance of getting a job, but I can tell you things are tight and expensive in Australia. They were when I was there, but I noticed a lot of people on WHV's manage.

You will not be saving much, to save any sort of money, you need to go to the fruit picking or mustering areas where site hunts for employees are part of it.

I can tell you, three Canadians from Alberta, did it, they were working heard, and in 12 months did extremely well.

The main job opportunities are in the hospitality and retail areas as there is generally a high staff turn over and back packers tend to be more reliable than locals who take those same jobs.

It is possible to get office admin work, both full and part-time, so don't rule it out but focus more on the other types of work that are not taxing and give you time to have fun.

You are required to have access to sufficient funds when you arrive on a WHV and a return ticket or the funds to buy one. $5000 is considered to be sufficient funds but that does not include your return ticket. They do not always check that you have access to $5000 but they often do and if you cannot demonstrate that you have it you will not be allowed into the country but will be sent home on the next flight.

The $5000 is to tide you over until you can find work. The quicker you get a job the better. If you are considering working as a waitress or in a bar, you must have a Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate (RSA). You can get the RSA online, there are various websites where you can do it. Check these out

https://www.google.com.au/webhp?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8#q=RSA+NSW

If you are thinking of working in a pub or a club in NSW you will also need the Responsible Conduct of Gambling certificate as all clubs and most pubs have poker machines and TAB outlets. The RCG is not available online at this stage to my knowledge, you should check. If it isn't, you can do a one-day course at TAFE in Sydney to get it.

Backpacker hostels (apostrophes are unnecessary for plurals) vary quite a bit. There are plenty of them, check a few out and pick one that suits you. They are the cheapest accommodation. You might be lucky and find share accommodation, check it out when you arrive. There are various websites to find jobs and word of mouth in hostels is often good.
