I can't remember the last time I said howdy mate or g'day. I greet people (about 100 or so) each day on a friendly basis and I normally say, " hi, how's it going Mr Jones", " Hi Tom", "Hey David", "Morning Greg". People sometimes actually get offended by the use of the term "mate" if you're not their best friend. But then, I'm a female so blokes might be different!

You do the Koala dance when meeting new people. First you make the Koala noise twice. Then you raise your arms like your climbing a tree and then touch noses.

Or some do the Kangaroo hop but that is bit more complicated so most just do the Koala dance.

For me it's Hi, Hello, Morning. Personally I can't stand people who call everyone Mate it's sort of grovelling.

Actually - it is Hi or hello. Good morning or Good afternoon is good too.

howdy mate and Hi Mate is NOT used for everyone. It is one of those things that need to be learnt by living here as to WHEN and to WHOM it is appropriate to use.
