I am trying to plan a summer trip and I would like to go to Australia, problem is I don't know what suits me best. I would like a place with nice beaches that still has a well developed city. I have always wanted to visit the Great Barrier Reef but don't know what else is around there. I also would like to visit Sydney, but am not sure how much there is to do. I need help trying to figure out where to go and why.

When you say summer do you mean the Australian summer (Dec to Feb)? If so then I'm afraid it's not a good time to see the Great Barrier Reef as it is cyclone season and wet, hot and humid. For the Great Barrier Reef visit Cairns and Port Douglas - there is heaps to do in the area due to the nearby Daintree Rainforest with croc tours, beaches etc. But visit the area in our winter, not summer, when the weather is lovely.

Sydney has amazing beaches, as does nearly all the southern half of Australia from the Sunshine Coast all down the east coast, and most of the south and west coasts as well.

How long are you staying for? Consider Sydney and the Gold Coast, and if you're staying longer and enjoy wilderness/wildlife consider Tasmania as well, or Byron Bay for 'alternative' culture, or one of the Whitsunday Islands - there's an island to suit everyone.

I have seen most of Australia except for the far north & I would have to say you will be happy where ever you go. It is endless what you can see in this Country. From the the desert of the Nullabour to Bells Beach, penguins in Victoria or the snow in Victoria & New South Wales. Watch any sport at the Melbourne Cricket Ground & you will be in awe or visit the Sports Museum & see Flemington Racecourse home of "The Race that Stops a Nation". Make sure you visit Tasmania as well & take a Gordon River Cruise then go up Mount Wellington or have a meal at Wrest Point Casino. The locals are friendly.

Anyways depends what you are looking for in Australia as to where is the best place for you to visit.

If you are looking for "outback" go to The Nothern Territory. There is Ayers Rock etc out there, youve probably heard of the whole "dingo got my baby, azaria chamberlain tale" That happened out there. (but dont let that turn you off).

If you are looking for "city" go to Sydney it has the Opera House, The Harbour Bridge, the harbour and the 2000 olympic park. Theres an aquariam, a zoo and a big IMAX theatre. You can climb the Harbour Bridge (one of our icons) there are tours etc, some beaches.

If you are looking for "homey" go to tasmania (though it is detached from the main australia so you will need to fly/boat it down to there. Tasmania have the tasmian devils there in the zoos, they are going extinct and found no where else in the world..they are good to see (vicious though) Along with Port Arthur (a historical site..lovely gardens)

If you are looking for "beauty & fun" go to The Gold Coast in Queensland, spectacular beaches, lovely warm weather and you can go scuba diving over the Great Barrier Reef, the Largest and ofcourse most beautiful reef in the word. They also have Brisvegas, in the city of brisbane (in Queensland) It has the whole "las vegas" theme. This is also the main area of Amusement parks in Australia. They have Sea World, Movie World, Wet and Wild and Dreamworld.

It really depends what you want to see as to where you should go..but i reccomend going to all those places (if your budget allows) because it really is a great way to see Australia...to experience all aspects. But by the sounds of it Queensland looks like the best for you with the reef, the amusement parks and the beaches..
