Most of the small towns I can think of have way less than 600 people.

Dunkeld in Victoria has about 450 people, and because it's right next to the Grampians, it might count as somewhere cool.

Lancelin on the WA coast would also be about the right size. During summer the tourists might make it a bit bigger than you're looking for. Jurien and Cervantes might also be contenders, but I think they are both bigger.

The smallest towns in Australia (and in my opinion, the coolest), are along the Eyre Highway, between South Australia & Western Australia. These little towns have populations about no more than 500 people, some about 100-odd, literally in the middle of nowhere, in one of the greatest deserts of the world, bordered by one of the greatest oceans of the world.

Walkabout is a great website that lists the demographics, history, points of interest, accommodation and transport in most towns (big and small) in Australia.

Richmond, a town with a population of 700, is about five hours west of Townsville.

It is currently in the news as it's council is selling blocks of land for $1.00, to help populate the town with people that have specific trades eg hairdresser, medical staff, plumber etc..

You have to secure a loan to build and have to live and work in the town to qualify, but what a great line for your story.

There's heaps on the net about it if you're interested.
