My dad is going to get a job working for the US in Australia. As a young American with no particular skill, would it be possible for me to work in Australia? Also, is it easy for someone like me to get a part time or full time job (like working at a restaurant or retail store) as a high school graduate with some college credits? I will be moving to Sydney, but I will only be there when I come home from college in America.

If your father comes to work in Australia, the only way you will be able to get a visa to come with him is if you are a full time student and dependent on him. If you were under 18, that wouldn't be the case but now that you're an adult, you must qualify as a dependent before you can be included on his visa application and that must be as a migrating secondary applicant if you are to have work and residence rights. As long as you enter Australia to validate your visa before the specified first entry date, you will then be able to leave the country to return to college and then come back to Australia with unrestricted work rights as long as your visa is still valid.

And Rodney T is talking through his hat. He has completely misunderstood the nature of a minor change to the regulations which won't benefit you in any way.

It likely that the visa your father will be working under will not permit the children to work at all in Australia. If he is on a temp visa (not Perm Resident visa) you are not permitted to work when you are home from college. You need to check this out first.

You can move with your family, but I doubt you'll get any work, besides your home country's obesity holes like McDonald's and KFC. You'll need a proper degree from a University to work here.

Go for it bro, my school counsellor told me way more opportunities in Oz than the States

I'm going there too, just need to find a skill they lack and do a certified course in it, apparently they have a MASSIVE skill shortage

I don't know, but I would have thought that the answer was yes. Go to the Aus immigration site and look for yourself. immi.gov.au

Anyone have the feeling that there's one person here with about 3 handles?

Nah. Yanks are not welcome anywhere. You are the scum of the earth remember. Canadians are vastly preferred as Australians LOVE them beyond belief.

Yes, you can, the law has recently been changed where American citizens can work on arrival in Australia. Just do a few weeks course in the US in anything, like hairdressing or cooking or plumbing, and you will be approved, and welcome to Australia!
