There is no 'legal' age for leaving home in Australia. Generally the law will allow a person of 16 years of age to leave home without the need for parental approval. However, if the child is deemed at risk from a person outside the home, then the child can returned to the home and prevented from leaving until the age of 17. Also, a child under 16 years must still attend school whether living at home or not.

Just remember that to leave home your friend will need a place to stay and money. She'll need to be 18 before she can rent a flat/house, as she legally cannot sign a lease until that age.

The best thing she can do is go to Centrelink and ask what help is available to her. This website might help too: http://www.reachout.com.au/default.asp?ti=77

Legal Age To Move Out

Anyone that says 18 doesn't know what they're talking about, because I moved out of home at 17 no problems at all. I had to, because I was 17 when I first started uni. There's technically no 'legal age' to move out, but 16 is generally the age that age at which students no longer have to attend secondary school and are able to be supported by Centrelink if they go to tafe etc.... if they don't want to finish high school.

The legal age is 16. Good to hear you have a job and are willing to pay your way, I hope you aren't going to drop out of school just so you can move. While it would be better not to need centrelink, your education is still important. I believe your parents are expected to support you until you're 21, so perhaps they would be happy to contribute a little towards your rent or pay for your schooling, etc. I would hope you would only move out if your parents approve and not against their wishes. It is still important to keep them in your life, you never know when you may need to move back home.

If you can get a letter from your parents, stating that you cannot live at home, then you can move out at sixteen and be supported by centrelink. Otherwise, you need to be moving away for study, i.e university, or eighteen. Of course, if your friend can support herself, then she can move out earlier, but may have trouble as she will not be able to sign a lease. Hope this helps.

i wouldn't recommend it until you are at least 18 but i do believe the legal age is 16... i'm pretty sure because my cousin moved out at 16, but that was 2 years a go, but i don't think it's changed in that short time...

Legally you can move out at 18 but many teenagers leave home at 16.

You need to be able to show you can support yourself.

I have heard of teens who have just turned 15 moving out of home and being supported by Centrelink. Give them a call and check it out.
