What's a great location that is affordable and close to a wide range of activities to stop the kids from getting bored?

I'm looking forward to reading your responses - and when you've answered my question why not visit the new Yahoo!7 travel site My Australia - http://au.travel.yahoo.com/my-australia/

Hi Mike

My husband and I have 7 kids ranging in age from 17 down to 3 years old. We've been on some great family holdiays over the years but as the family grew the choices became limited because not many places can cater for such a large family or the activities may suit a certain age group but not another. Even though there are not many families as large as ours there are a lot of blended families that holiday together and as such would face similar problems as we do.

My suggestions from experience are:

1. Broome, WA - great beaches, great outback places to see, good food and people but may be a bit restricted in activities for teenagers.

2. Tasmania - Hire a troop carrier and visit the many fabulous locations, Cradle Mountain, Freycinet, Hobart, Launceston, etc. The kids loved the trip across on the boat - recommend bungey straps for little ones!! A bit nerve wrecking for Mum !

3. Kingfisher Resort on Fraser Island or one of the other resorts, great 4WD, pools, nice facilities and lots to do for all ages.

4. Lindemand Island - Fantastic Circus school suits all ages, packages include all you can eat food, beer, wine and soft drink. But a bit pricey when your family gets to our size, we got a quote recently to go back there - $20,000. We'll give that one a miss.

5. Couran Cove - all round good spot.

6. Gold Coast - but I think it's been done to death and wouldn't go back there except maybe to Dream World or Wet 'n' Wild.

7. Sunshine Coast, QLD - we enjoyed this spot so much we now live here. The Big4 caravan parks have good self-contained lodges, we got two side-by-side which the older kids liked having a place of their own away from the little ones.

8. But my absolute all time must go back to loaction is for Mum and Dad only - Orpheus Island - devine, my husband and I hope one day to be able to go back there, fantastic, luxurious and pampering. Makes having kids all worthwhile if you can get a break at a place like this.

Overall, simpler is better, don't sweat the little stuff, the kids have fun just going somewhere, having nice food and a few extra treats can be novelty enough for most. Experience what your own local areas have first, check out the national parks and other interesting locations. you might be surprised how much is on offer close to home.

For the teenagers ensure you've got internet access and mobile phone coverage or they get sever withdrawals !!! We always bring a laptop and mobile phones with internet access, also useful for checking out what's on and places to go.

Hi Mike

I think the Sunshine Coast has more going for school children as you have got.......

1.) The Beaches

2.) Aussie World Fun Park

3.) Under Water World

4.) The Big Pineapple

5.) Ginger Factory

6.) Your not far from Australia Zoo, Home of Steve Irwin.

7.) Markets are on all over the Sunshine Coast but Eumundi Markets are suppose to be the best.

8.) Plus you have the Towns to visit up on the ranges, especially the montville shops which your wife will love.

9.) Glass House Mountains and do some bush walking.

10.) Wappa Dam picnic area for more walking and a picnic.

11.) Hire a boat for the day at Maroochydore.

Well if this isn't going to convince you with this great list, then I feel your going to be one hard case to please. Cheers.

Hi Mike,

Here are just a couple of my thoughts.

The obvious choice is always the Gold Coast. However, during summer holidays, it is way too busy - unless you wait until near the end of the holidays. Near the end of the holidays, accommodation is easier to come by and you may even find the odd discount here and there if demand begins to drop off. The theme parks are very full also during the summer holidays and therefore not as good value for money - i.e. waiting in extraordinary long queues.

Whilst the Gold Coast has probably the widest selection of things to do, it can be expensive and also very crowded. Having run apartments on the Gold Coast for 6 years, I know how many people feel even more tired at the end of their holiday than in the beginning!

My choice over the Gold Coast would be the relatively less known and frequented Sapphire Coast in Southern NSW. This boasts some great towns and the area has lots of activities for the kids but is also away from the total hustle and bustle of the theme parks. Granted, there is no Tower Of Terror, Giant Drop or Lethal Weapon, however, there are still as many water activities that can give the kids a thrill just the same!

Hi Mike, East Gippsland in Victoria is a great place to take kids for holidays. There are plenty areas for bushwalking, 90 mile beach at Lakes Entrance, mini golf, markets, fishing, horse riding, affordable activities and enough to do to wear the kids out. A wide variety of accommodation is available also. Lakes is a very popular place in the Summer time and if you are around the area on New Years Eve they have a terrific fire works display. Have fun deciding. Cheers Deb.

Tasmania, it has everything for a safe, fantastic FAMILY holiday with heaps of fun stuff for all ages. Touring around the whole state and making it a family journey choosing activities far and wide. Heaps of local festivals and entertainment throughout the summer where kids and adults can be part of the community and really enjoy the area being visited not just pass through looking at the map for the next overcrowded theme park, beach or other attraction, your sure to have a fantastic time and the locals would show you a great time for sure. Check out wwwdiscovertasmania.com or any of the local council sites for up to date info on local events. Enjoy Tasmania, Perfect paradise

Ok there are three places that I remeber going on caravaning holidays with my grandparents and those were the best holidays I ever had...

1. Tumut - NSW - Tumut Caravan Park

(there are many activities you can do including trail rides, bush walks, markets, etc. plus the caravan park has it's own unique touch as there lives heaps of possums in the park and most are so tame they actually come into your van to eat... I loved it and I was 10 u could pat the possums without being bitten)

2. Racecourse Beach Tourist Caravan Park - Bawley Point - NSW... kids can ride bikes, swim in their awesome pool, at the beach, and in holidays they have school holiday programs and it's not far from Ulladulla, gold rush theme park, a zoo, rollerskating rink, Antiques of Distinction, Soul Rider Surf School, Birdland Animal Park, Fern Gully Winery, Kids Biz and funland.

3. Finally Oberon - NSW (Near the Blue Mountains) Need I say more!?! the most beautiful educational and fun place that creates awesome memories

A really good place to take the kids for a summer holiday is Port Fairy in Victoria. There is plenty to do for the kids and the adults can relax on the beach or go to the numerous cafés & lovely old pubs. If it is too wet for the beach Warrnambool is only 20 minutes up the road and it has shopping centre and cinemas. It is a nice relaxing place and there are at least 3 caravan parks for the budget conscious as well as all other forms of accommodation. I highly recommend it!

The absolute best place in Australia to take kids for a summer holiday is Denmark in the South of Western Australia. Stay at Ocean Beach Caravan park, tour the numerous attractions, admire the scenery between Albany and Walpole. While you are there. visit all the wineries, dine-out, swim, surf, fish, snorkel enjoy the sunshine and perfect weather. I've taken my own children there so many times over the years in the summer holidays so that now Denmark will always be in our minds for the great times we've shared together there.

Gd day! Mike, We have a really fine caravan Park here on the Tweed North Coast called "North Star" it's situated at Hastings Point, it got everything for the kids, swimming pools, climbing bars, supervised recreational activities, cinema shows and even free tennis! It's close to Coolangatta/Tweed or Twin towns as the locals call them, plus it's handy for the airport. I believed it won the top award for best park in Australia a couple of years ago! And I'm pushing it, but I have no vested interest in it! Have a great day Mike.

As a young family, we've tripped around Oz alot. The best place we've found is, ironically, close to home - Couran Cove Island Resort, a bush island eco-resort on South Stradbroke Island. There is a wealth of family-friendly activities and a range of accommodations for most budgets. If you can't engage with the kids there, you probably never will! There are even some luxury elements for parents (eg. supervised kids' club and day spa). Best thing is, you are away from the hustle and bustle of the Gold Coast, but still able to access theme parks and shopping if you wish. I wouldn't claim it's perfect, but it's probably as good as you can get for a family Summer holiday everyone will enjoy.

Although I grew up on the Gold Coast, I wanted to take my kids on a holiday where they could just be kids. No high-rises, no luxuries, just plain old-fashioned fun without the trimmings but with lots of time to share as a family.

Seal Rocks Camping Reserve, at just a couple of hours north of Newcastle NSW, was the perfect location.

Everyone in this lovely isolated seaside town seems to kick off their city shoes as soon as they arrive. Making friends with the folks next door is as natural as walking through the bushland to an almost idyllic beach where the waves are good for surfers and the fishermen bring in their daily catch to hand out to anyone who might want to share in their success of the day.

Watching the seals from the top of the cliff during the early summer months is a spectacle. There are rocks to climb and bonfires on the beach with guitars and singing is a regular occurrence.

At dusk, after the sausages and freshly barbequed fish have been cooked and shared between fellow campers, tents glow as everyone gets together for a game of cards while the kids play happily together in the pathways before an early bedtime for everyone.

It really is a beautiful spot and is a great holiday experience.

Well mate I would have to say Esperance on the south coast

of Western Australia.I 've spent several yrs down there a while

ago and the beaches are just fantastic. The views are really

spectactular and there are also some great fishing spots.

I've also went out to Woody Island on the Sea Breeze which

was operated by a fella by the name of Don Mc'kenzie. The

fees were quite reasonable too.The townsfolk are very

friendly also.Yep, Esperance is the way to go - Dougie

Hi Mike,

My family travel to North Stradbroke Island every January. We camp at Adder Rock council camping ground and we have the best time. The grounds are well kept and the beaches and surf are spectacular.

There is a fabulous community spirit and there is lots of good old fashioned family 'stuff' happening in the evenings. Close to gorge walk, sand taboganing and the Keys - large fresh water lakes.

Our best memories are lying on the beach with our friends and gazing at stars, satellites and comets - at night. And watching dolphins and turtles by day eating a locally made gelati.

Hope this helps,

Well, Canberra's great - there are so many things to do there. Melbourne and Sydney are great too because they also have many tourist attractionsand beaches.

Adelaide, my personal favourite, is a bit more low-key, but nonetheless a great place. Beaches and caravan parks in SA are fantastic, you could go somewhere up the river Murray too. There are lots of playgrounds, museums, zoos, swimming centres, galleries, movies, etc., which children could enjoy. Victor Harbor is also fantastic.

Kangaroo Island is a great tourist attraction, loads of animal themed outings.

What kids will enjoy depends on their age, though so there are some things to consider.

the best holidays i remember were at Mandurah, on a house boat, and in Pemberton. We (my mum, dad, younger brother and sister and i) had heaps of fun on both holidays, in Mandurah we went fishing, swimming with dolphins, ate at some awesome restuarants, and we got to see heaps of different places, being on the house boat, we could go anywhere along the coast, and surprising enough, we found heaps to do. In Pemberton we got to climb the highest tree (we raced) we went for bush walks, we went to a trout farm and a yabbie farm, horse riding and we toasted marshmallows over a fire in the caravan park where everyone would get together for tea. It was one of the best holidays i ever had, and since then i have travelled around australia with my husband, and they are sill my favourite holiday destinations...my parents loved Mandurah that much, they moved there, and i now work for a tour and charter company....and i will be taking time off next year to go back to Pemberton and look at buying a home!

Tasmania is great for kids and mine had lots of fun; also came back with much improved knowledge of Australian History and wildlife. First there is the ferry from Melbourne to Devonport, which my kids enjoyed very much. Outside Devonport there's a chocolate factory to visit (free). Then drive through Sheffield, where all the buildings have paintings on them, some by well known Australian artists. Nearby Mole Creek has caves that are good value. Cradle Mountain has a wonderful camp site with lots of wildlife and the best camp kitchen with lovely log fire. There are lots of excellent child-sized walks. Lake St Clair is good too: Take a ferry across the lake and walk back to the visitor's centre (suitable for 6 and older) through spectacular rain forest with the largest tree ferns I've ever seen. Tasmazia is an awesome collection of mazes which will keep the kids (and parents) entertained for a day! Good pancakes, too. Mount Field National Park has a very good camp site and rangers have special programs for children during school holidays. We joined ours on a night trip, searching for creatures (big and small) and visiting the glow worm cave. Nearby you can see some of the largest trees in the world. On the way to Hobart there is a trout farm which allows the children to feed the many different types of trout in huge ponds (fish food dispensing machines). My kids' favourite activity in Hobart was a visit to Cadbury's chocolate factory (not free but good value). They also enjoyed the Salamanca Markets and the Antarctica museum. Kids are allowed on the tour of the Cascade brewery - it won't be their favourite, but it may well be yours. Port Arthur is excellent, and you absolutely must do the ghost tour! A day trip to Maria Island is also good for lovely scenery, interesting history and cliffs with fossils (I don't recommend camping there because there are possums from Hell! that chew through your tent to steal your food). Strahan has lots to do; best of which is a ride on the steam train. Around the centre and north there are farms where you can pick your own strawberries and check out the fields of lavender. There are many excellent wildlife parks. So many things to do and most of these are inexpensive or free. For affordable and child-friendly accommodation I can highly recommend the YHA hostels all around Tasmania. If you can tolerate some camping, your children will probably love that too.

I've been to Australia 4 times as a child. There's many great places to go, You've got the "edge" in Melbourne. Oh ya, you could try New Zealand, or Tasmania. Tasmania is great, fresh air, that place is beautiful. But honestly, if you wanna stop you kids from being bored, go to Melbourne, take your kids to The Victoria Market. It's only open on the weekends but man there's so much to buy there. They even have great pizza there. One's a cafe at the end of the market. There's many good pizza parlors there. The city at night is so beautiful, they light like 3 huge flamethrowers that burst every second hour. Australia is a blast!!

I think the Gold Coast is all theme parks and crowded beaches- o.k. if that is your thing.... We just bought our house and haven't got too much money to afford to travel. Last holidays we bought a tent from a garage sale and went camping on my in-laws 80acre property. We went on bush walks, swam in the dam, caught yabbies, sang songs, toasted marshmallows over a small can- drought means no fires. My kids loved it- especially when it rained, and the shadows and noises were very entertaining. You can camp anywhere, and it is so affordable. You can even camp in your backyard or your lounge. I think it is the best way to get away and spend quality time with your family without interuption.

My husband and I were lucky enough to drive around Australia last Summer visiting a huge number of beaches on the way - the first two places I am planning on taking my little girl when she is older are;

Ningaloo, WA - great camping and the best snorkelling in Australia and its free! You don't have to go out in a boat for 3hrs either - just walk straight in off the beach. There are great boat trips, space to ride bikes and we even saw turtles nesting. I would go back when the whale sharks are there.

Mystery Bay, NSW - what a great bush camp ground! And right on a really nice safe beach for kids. And awesome surf spots for the older kids/dads. There are great drives to Narooma and towns like Tilba Tilba too.

Enjoy

South Coast of NSW is a great place. From Stanwell Park to Jamberoo. Take the Grand Pacific Drive for a breath taking view of the coast. Drop by at Kiama and witness the famous Blowhole, and stroll along the crafts and arts store in the town centre. For the kids and kids-at-heart, Jamberoo will be a great hit. If you'd rather spend it on the beach, Seven Mile Beach is great, plus a host of other beaches a drive away.

Hi Mike,

I'm biased, I think Sydney is a great place for the kids to get away. Taronga Park Zoo is wonderful - getting there is lovely on the ferry across the harbour. Luna Park at night is wonderful too, plus sydney has all the parks (Botanical, Centennial...) and as summer draws near, night markets. But if yr in Sydney wanting to get away, then I'd have to agree, Cairns, north QLD.

My family used to go up to Coffs Harbour along with a couple of sets of aunts and uncles and cousins.

I remember snorkelling, four wheel driving, going to the waterslide park (if it is still there!) hiking and swimming at the beach. The summer seemed endless and we were so tired at the end of every day from running madly about or swimming.

It's a good place because it has all the conveniences of the city but with incredible beaches and beautiful rainforests.

I love Cairns!!

Staying at Trinity Beach, North of Cairns. Going out on the Great Barrier Reef – great deals for kids, especially in the school holiday when they go for free. Even a trip out to Green Island is only 50 mins by boat away and has everything you need for a day trip out to explore the reef if you don’t want to go the ‘full hog’.

Cairns Esplanade is amazing now – and they are still adding new features. The lagoon and ‘Muddy’s Playground’ will give the kids hours of fun and will never want to leave. Free BBQ areas also to stay the whole day to enjoy the surroundings more.

Cairns tropical Zoo http://www.cairnstropicalzoo.com.au is open everyday but they also put on a night show “Discover Wildlife by Night’ http://www.cairnsnightzoo.com a true ‘Aussie’ experience, it includes BBQ buffet and drinks!

Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park http://www.tjapukai.com.au is a great place to get some ‘education’ for the kids whilst on holiday. Nearby is Cairns Cable Ski park. http://www.cableskicairns.com.au A must for the kids to learn how to ski and have fun. You can laze on the deck chairs or have lunch there while watching your kids ride the surf……..

Many rainforest walks up the Daintree to take in. The canopy in the Daintree Daintree Discovery Centre - http://www.daintree-rec.com.au

gives you headphones to put on to take in the full experience, learn about wildlife in the rainforest as you go! Stuff I didn’t even know …and I’m Australian!

See the kids CAN still learn while on holiday.

A absolute must is doing a bungy jump while here - http://ajhackett.com.au Grab those kids on video! Most weekends they even had free live bands playing.

Plenty of beaches around for the whole family to enjoy – I believe Cairns has it all, and of course it’s not as busy as the bigger cities.

Is that the real Mike Whitney? Geez i love ya mate keep up the great work.

I dont think Uluru would be nice in summer for the kids, it would be boiling. I would stay somewhere on the coast close to the beaches, on the north coast of NSW is always good.

Down Victoria way the Great Ocean Rd is always a must especially that sea breeze during summer is awesome to cool you down.

Good on you Mike, i look forward to seeing you on Channel 7

Would have to agree with K Bear :

"Cairns & The Table lands"

There is just so many things to do and see, the scenery is beautiful, and the air smells sooo good. I was born & have family there. Took my own family up for a hol a few years back.....Speaking from experience, we could have done with another month and even then, I seriously doubt we'd have run out of things to do and see.

"Sigh" Just the thought makes me homesick.

Based in Perth WA, I'd be heading south down to Margaret River.

Great beaches, fishing, caving, trees and forest, farm stays, lotsa places for picnics, great townsites to explore.

Alternatively, head north to Lancelin or Wedge Island to hit the dunes!

or perhaps even further to Kalbarri :)

The best place I have been to is Couran Cove up in Queensland. It's a quiet resort island with its own private beach and waterfront rooms. There are plenty of activities like archery, waterskiing and surfing but it's also a great place to kick back and relax. It's extremely peaceful there and the only way to get around is to either walk or bike-ride. I have been there twice and plan to make that one of my regular holiday spots.

Mike we like going to lake conjola. funny thing is it is only about 45 min south from where we live. you have a nine hole golf course, you can swim ,ride,go to Milton or Ualladalla a short drive batsmans bay for the day. the kids can go wild while you sit there wetting a line or collecting fresh drift oysters for that relaxing afternoon.by the lake with a couple of beers. my kids love it and you would think home was miles away.

For Summer? Tasmania!

- Heaps of hills and nature walks close to major towns

- Sky walk through tree top level a short drive south of Hobart.

- Lots of beaches around the mouth of Derwent River

- Fishing / snorkling / skiing available

- Tall ships to cruise on

- and that is without talking about the Syd-Hob race sailing in just before New Year's

The kids should see out of the way areas, and Tassie is "overseas" with the ferry from Melbourne. Take the car and Have Fun

... almost forgot, Antartica research HQ has their Aussie base near Hobart. Also worth a look if you can't visit Happy Feet-land

merumbula - i dont know the exact spelling but its the best. there are so many beaches but at the same time wild life and it gets you away from technology and commercialism back to get family bonding. i am a kid and when we went last year, it was the best holiday ever. we stayed at a national park that had a pool and activities and caberns inside..its affordable too, look it up!

I would have to say Queensland - I love Cairns the best, it has heaps of things to keep kids amused - some resorts have Kids Clubs which always offer great fun, plus there is Muddys Playground, great beaches around Palm Cove, Port Douglas is only an hour away, Kurunda and travelling there by either train or skyrail, Adventure Duck and you can have a day trip to Green Island.

I also love the Gold Coast - I've stayed twice now at Paradise Resort which is VERY child friendly, they have the best Kids Club and swimming pools, playground, activities for parents and children. Its very close to the beach, and all of the amusement parks - Dreamworld, MovieWorld, Wet N Wild, etc, etc. Australia Zoo is the most fantastic day trip, as is a trip out to the tablelands and any of the islands - Hamilton rocks. I LOVE QUEENSLAND !!

Busselton in western Australia. Lovely sheltered beaches, lots of farmstays and back to nature things to do as well as a bit of history and commercial fun too. Surf beaches for the older kids too.

Also it's not too far from the beautiful vineyards of Margaret River for the parents to sample a few of the fine reds on offer!

Dear Mike,

I believe that Wilsons Promontory, in Victoria is a terrific place to take the family. Plenty of wide open space for the kids to run and play, with beautiful Beaches and wild life to observe. You are 25 minutes (approx) away from Foster, for necessities and quaint little shops to browse through (there is also a General Store at Yanakie, which can provide your basic needs, (Fuel, Milk, Bread, Alcohol etc) and only 10 minutes away).

Around the Bay, as such, at Toora they have what I would say is the BEST PUB in Victoria. They are renovating it, but have built a terrific Kids room, and the meals are beautifully presented, with quantity not being an option and the prices are reasonable, certainly not out of reach for the average family. It has become that popular, with even the locals frequent this venue and you do have to book. I do recommend this Pub to anyone. The parents can have there meal in peace while the kids play.

My parents have lived down near there for the past 5 years, I take my children down, every opportunity I get, so I pack up 3 kids, 2 dogs and a rabbit, in order to achieve the bliss of 3 happy kids playing out in the sun. Definitely an environment that one cannot give them, living in Melbourne. And only a short drive away, with no questions going down in the car like, "are we there yet?".

My children have been given the opportunity, by one of the farmers that my Parents have become friends with in the area, to feed Calves, Piglets, drink real milk not processed, ride motor bikes, climb on haystacks you get the picture.

Many thanks for you time, and do hope that you give this area a look.

Mid North Coast of NSW - between Red Rock and Nambucca Heads and out west to Bellingen and Dorrigo (no offence to those I've inadvertently left out). There’s lots of stuff for kids to do, like Ice Skating (great way to cool off in summer, but it doesn’t get that hot here), Water Slide is (still!) here, Big Banana has a few venues for kids including Candy Making and Shop, there are so many beautiful, safe beaches to swim and play - watch the whales and dolphins. Lots of kids parks/playgrounds, bush walks, Pet Porpoise Pool - swim with the dolphins! Plenty of places to stay with your pets too, not just the kids. Stunning scenery, stunning beaches, stunning mountains and views. National Parks teeming with wildlife. Bike riding trails, lookouts, What more could you want?! Shops? Definitely! Restaurants? Lots of them, and heaps to choose from. Wineries! The list is endless. Did I say it is beautiful here?! Heck, I moved here and it's still like an holiday. A truly wonderful, magical place to be.

Why not do what I did and have a year-round holiday and live here!! We even have wallabies roaming and living in our suburban streets! I could go on and on!

I think down in Tasmania would be a good place. I live just outside of Launceston, and we often just holiday in the state.

You can take the kids to the beaches, up to Cradle Mountain, or to the many wildlife parks (They can see a real Tasmanian Devil).

Plus Tasmania usually isn't as expensive as the mainland. You can also save by travelling over on Spirit of Tasmania. It is great.

One of our favourite spots is Inverloch in Victoria. It depends on the type of holiday you like. We like camping and this is right on the beach. My kids are happy to play at the beach all day searching for sand crabs and swimming. There are beautiful day trips and lots of time to be a family without having to rush. I know most say the Gold Coast but apart from being very expensive it is something EVERYONE seems to do. To me a holiday is something you come back relaxed. So many holidays are rush rush rush. Just so you can get to lot's of places. For us I want a place where we can get away from everything and the kids make their own entertainment and go back to basics. I know this is not everyones idea of a holiday but it is mine and my two kids

All you need is a beach , a pond, or a lake. It could be anywhere. The best activities involve exploring and studying. And bored kids are kids with no imagination, they are the ones who really need a simple holiday. It doesn't need to cost a fortune and you don't need anywhere to plug a television in.

Billabong Ranch in Echuca/Moama Vic. It has accommodation, a range of family activities such as pedal boats, horse riding, horse and carriages, mini golf, bouldering, animal nursery, archery, extreme off road buggies, inground pool and an on-site licensed family restaraunt. You can take a winery tour in horse and carriage also.

Another great place is Tuki resort, Smeaton where you can stay in ranging from a 3bed farmhouse for $140 a night to a stone spa cottage for $250pn. Included in price is open fire which is started for you, organic orange juice, ground coffee, herbal teas, lamb sausages made from Tuki's own lambs, eggs, bacon and everything else you need to cook your own gourmet breakfasts. There is a trout farm onsite which is free to access equipment for guests, there is also a restaraunt with the most scrumptious food and the views are AMAZING being located high in a mountainous range. Heaps of room to run around and explore for kids and also available are massages and beauty treatments in your cottage.

Somewhere not near me.

Seems the more stars the darn resorts have, the brattier the little brats shrieking and splashing and fighting and disobeying their inept parents are.

When we were young, a beach with a short stick or a few shells would be enough to keep us out of trouble all day, but these days kids need to be negotiated with and pleaded with to get them to do anything resembling good manners in public.

Less sugar, more fruit and a dose of good manners and respect, or stay home I reckon.

(And they get to go where mom and dad want to go. It worked for us)

Bah, humbug

Mate, it would have to be THE BASIN. This is a very well hidden camping ground set under a massive range in Pittwater bay, Sydney. It costs very little to camp there, has a beautiful lagoon with crystal clear water and all sydney sand.

Catch the ferry with camping gear from Palm beach jetty and you wil not be dissapointed. Daily milk, bread, papers and even a bottle of red - buy from ferry. There is hiking, caving and the best cricket pitch next to the water for all the best classic catches. We used to go there in the 80's/90's.

all the kids had endless amounts of fun. we never heard the words" I'm bored" during the whole stay which was really surprising especially from the kids in our clan. The kids ages range from 5- 17yo they enjoyed bush-walking,swimming,fishing seen lots of wildlife went on the sky-rail,and the scenic rail ride the kids found so much to do and it hardly cost anything the adults found it hard to keep up with the little monsters here is the web site of where we stayed.

Hi Mike,

My husband and I are relatively new to "holidaying with kids". However, for last year's Christmas/New Year break we took our then 3.5 yr old daughter to Happy Hallidays at Hallidays Point (near Forster, NSW). There are numerous options for accommodation from camping to caravaning to cabins to suites. Being close to Forster/Tuncurry was an added bonus but we found with the Weekly Program they had for the kids, it wasn't often our Daughter wanted to leave the premises. We ended up staying for 7 nights and ventured in to Forster/Tuncurry a number of times to: a) go fishing - our daughter caught her first fish! b) go to the movies c) go shopping d) visit the beaches and build sand castles and e) had lunch of fresh fish & chips by the water at the Co-op. Happy Hallidays' program for kids consists of Discos, trivia nights, face painting, treasure hunts, movie nights, etc., etc. There's a train ride through the grounds for the littlies, swimming pool with toddler pool sensibly covered by a shade sail and plenty of lounge chairs around the pools for the parents. There is a great indoor, all-weather play centre and arcade game room for the kids and a great BBQ area with cafe for the parents to have a drink and something to eat whilst their child/ren are in the play centre. There's another outdoor play area to the back of the grounds consisting of giant jumping pillow, slides, tennis courts and a mini golf course. We had a great time for the week we stayed at Happy Hallidays and recommend everyone with children give it a go at least once!

This holiday period, we're going to try Paradise Resort on the Gold Coast. We will have our daughter (4.5 years) and our little boy who will be 10 months of age. Having been on their website, they seem to be focused on the children too. We will be going in early February to miss the mad school holiday period. This is saving us on cost but will be more enjoyable being a less busy time too (hopefully). The added bonus here is that, despite going outside of school holiday times, the Zone4Kids Kids Club operates all year round. We intend visiting DreamWorld, SeaWorld and Australia Zoo whilst we're there.

Good luck and I hope you find the answers you're looking for.

Kind regards
chonkon

I reckon you should take the kids to "Jambaroo" for the summer holidays. I went there once it was awesome, it was nice to cool off. There were even rides for the people who didn't want to get wet.

As I said you should take the kids to "Jambaroo" for the Summer Holidays.

You could try many different places, there are lots of tourist attraction places, seaworld, dreamworld, etc are good choices but very expensive places to take a family, you could try the sunshine coast way as they have things like the big pineapple, that would be a great outing as they have open train rides through the plantations, etc, you could look on the Whats On Brisbane website(provided below) as they have free concerts, festivals, food & wine tasting, etc,it's usually all free:

http://www.ourbrisbane.com/whatson/events/

You could go to the Mt Cootha lookout at night, even have dinner/coffee there, there are heaps of wildlife sanctuaries, zoos, crocodile farm, the list in endless, have fun

why not take your family to the Central Coast of NSW.

there are many things to do here at reasonable prices including:

Reptile Park at Somersby

Forshore entertainment & fair at The Entrance (weekends & school holidays)

Pelican feeding at 3pm every day (The Entrance)

Bushwalking (take your pick where)

Beautiful beaches (Shelly Beach, Soldiers Beach-Norah Head, Terrigal just to name a few)

Horseriding

Boutique shopping at Terrigal for your wife!!!

Bowling

Tennis

A variety of restaurants, cafes and good pub food

the list goes on!!!

hope you consider visiting The Central Coast.

My family did & we loved it so much we moved here!!!

Whit, the only thing to do is kill the kids and take yourselves off to a romantic holiday on the island of Hawaii, namely Kona, its wonderful

No seriously, get hold of several resorts and check out their childrens activities programs, this is the only way to do this

Remember "different horses for different course" so my choices may not suit others

Cheers
