Thinking of going to adelaide for a 6 month school placement and wondered what people thought of the city and how it compares to the rest of Australia's larger cities.

Was there last year for a week in June as part of my Oz holiday. Very nicely laid out, surrounded by lots of parks. Central Adelaide is compact enough, and there are some free bus and tram services (just in the centre) so quite a lot of people don't bring in their cars, and the place has a rather pedestrian feel. There are several museums and art galleries, all worth a look, and a street (Rundle Mall) full of little market shops that you can spend ages browsing through. I found the people very friendly and helpful. It is dark by 6pm, as it is all over Australia (closer to the Equator than UK), but even in June, their winter, days were sunny and warm, and an outdoorsy type of lifestyle is normal. Compared with other larger cities, it may appear a bit more conservative, but that is really just the buildings and the city layout. The people were great. I'd gladly jump at the chance to go again. Go, and enjoy your visit !!

it's not that great

Yeah it's a nice place, you will get answers saying it's laid back and all, peaceful and smallish. If that's the kind of stuff you like to spend 6 months in then go for it.

Personally I would rather not live there. If I had to spend 6 whole months in Adelaide I think I might die. It's more of a really really big town than a city. That's what they used to say about Brisbane, but not anymore. What I am trying to say is, maybe in the distant future Adelaide will will become a more desirable place to live. Statistics show that Adelaide's growth rate is relatively negligible.

Go to Sydney, Melbourne, even Brisbane if you want to.

What can you do in Adelaide? Play lawn bowls, go to a cafe on the seaside, have a picnic in the park or drive to Melbourne.

Adelaide is a very dry city. It hardly rains, but when you feel like having a dip, Aldinga Beach, Maslin Beach and Moana Beach are the beaches for you. Adelaide is GREAT! You get to shop, relax and work at the same place! Amazing architecture and great beaches. It can get pretty hot, but it's still great! Don't go to Adelaide if you can't handle heat, because when you live here, you can get pretty dry!

Otherwise, Adelaide is AMAZING! It'll be the best 6 months of your life!

I found it a lovely place to visit. It is more laid back then most Aussie cities. If you go visit Rundle Mall. Also the wineries in the Adelaide Hills & nearby places such as Hahndorf are well worth visiting

I lived there for a year..as an outsider, to me it seemed very clean, very safe and the teenagers were all really nice....the poorer areas are seperate...which is wrong..but you never get to see the bad stuff...

For a start, it would be much smaller and not as crowded. The weather can be hot and dry there.
