I don't agree with the other answers. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I just spent two years living in Australia and liked it so much I am looking into becoming a permanent resident. I thought it was absolutely amazing. From the geography/geology, to the people, to the wildlife, to the food, etc....a very diverse, intriguing and relaxed country. Mind you, it's not without faults, but what place is?

Australia is a nice country, but the food is really bad. It's something you really should consider if you move there. I'm dead serious, the usual meal you get in Australia is the kind you would send back in America because it's so badly cooked. I mean so bad, even the waitress would sympathize. You should be prepared to do without a lot of your favorite snacks.

The people are cool, but they do have a tendency to be very lazy. The men, especially so, do not like to work hard. Stores close around 5 to 7 pm, and that's kind of weird. It is 90% white there, and sparsely populated. There really that isn't that much random crime or anything. However, the people kind of have a racial superiority complex that is very subtle. It has been documented, just look up Laurence Fishbourne and his experience shooting a movie there. I thought I was the only one. The American South is way worse, if you had to compare, but it's just something else you want to think of. Another thing is that the people aren't as greedy as Americans. As weird as it is, tipping is generally not expected. As an American, I did it because my waiters and taxi drivers were nice, but no one will rip you off or anything.

If you can deal with the culture shock, you may like to live in Australia. People are generally normal and intelligent, which is a refreshing change from America. If you are looking to visit, don't waste your time in the cities. Just go to the Outback and take a tour on a ranch. You'll see kangaroos, wallabies, herds of goats and hawks that attack the little joeys(wicked cool!)...the Aussie Outback is just truly amazing. It is truly an escape from civilization. I say if you don't go to the Outback, you haven't gone to Australia...

It always looks inviting in pictures but it is so close to Asia and China sounds like it is looking for expansion and confrontation. I would not be comfortable in Australia at the present time because of this.
