Sydney has great surf from Palm Beach to Cronulla and is a very lively city. If you want surf and nightlife, Sydney is the city for you.

I would suggest the Gold Coast. It's apparently the best beach in Australia to surf. They apparently hold the worldwide surfing championships, such as the 'Quiksilver Pro' up there. It's also very lively and touristy location - I think this place would best suit you.

Jack, I loved Dee Why, but seriously, I saw some serious surfing at a beach called Bombo.

Tasmania - Shipstern Bluff (warning: go here only if you have a deathwish).

Western Australia - Margaret River, Perth (Trigg Beach, Ocean Reef)

New South Wales - Sydney (Tamarama, Curl Curl, Narrabeen, Manly, Maroubra, Kurnell)
