They do! The city of Alice Springs is in what they call the red centre. There are large farms & cattle properties dotted throughout the area, but lack of water would be the main reason it is so sparsely populated.

There isn't as many resources, lack of water and it would be extremely hot. The middle of Australia is basically a desert.

People do live in the middle of Australia. the majority of the population lives on the edges of the coast because conditions are more hospitable and there is better access to resources such as water, food, fuel and arable lands. Its a bitlike most Canadians living along the southern boundary of Canada.

Google Alice Springs & see what you find.
That city is smack in the middle of the country.

Why dont people live on the Salt Lakes in Utah? Or Death Valley in Arizona or wherever, or on top of Everest or anywhere else that is GUARANTEED to kill you?
Middle of Australia? Deadest, most hostile and dry place on the whole Continent.
Go there and see for yourself. Take plenty of water, a good GPS, emergency beacon, a paramedic, 20 boy scouts, a very strong radio transmitter, huge loads of food, sturdy tents and a modified 4x4 along with a really good Aboriginal tracker and a bible--you'll need them all to survive. For just one day.Jeez mate, you wouldnt even get Phil out there ! Broken Hill is far enough out he says with a smile !

..., why don't you get a proper detailed map of Australia and see why not. You will also see dotted around in some remote areas a couple of little towns. In once instance I saw, had a pub, general store type thing, and a vehicle service center for refueling travelers and professional truck drivers. The also have little snack bars where you may be able to get maybe a breakfast and quick lunch.
Most of the truck drivers have their thermos refilled with coffee or tea for the long haul still ahead.
As for a major city other than Alice Springs, wouldn't be sustainable enough.

It's not a very habitable area.

Ever hear of The Alice? (Alice Springs NT) Large city almost in the center of OZ.
Main reason: no water, it is all desert.

There are a number of reasons why.
1) it is really dangerous in Australia.
2) really dry
3) remote
4) I think they have a "no build" policy on the land
